چکیده

Each acoustic instrument is one of a kind. Its unique acoustic properties are transferred from the physical characteristics of its source materials and a handcrafted touch. In contrast, electronic and computer-based instruments lack this distinguishing trait. Though the technology support in music instruments offers great flexibility, it tends to foster predictable and generic results, particularly with common use of easily-cloned digital presets. This paper presents a new approach to the design and fabrication of instruments that combine the advantage of acoustic and electric instruments -hybrid instrumentsthat exist simultaneously in both physical and digital environments. This approach exploits physical/acoustic properties via a replaceable physical object complemented by a simulated shape or other digital signal manipulation. The key concepts of this approach are presented through an example: The Chameleon Guitar, detailed in this paper along with evaluation from musicians and instrument makers. This work aims to demonstrate the possibility of maintaining the qualities found in real acoustic instruments, such

A platform for manipulation and examination of the acoustic guitar: The Chameleon Guitar

A platform for manipulation and examination the acoustic guitar is presented, based on a novel guitar design – the Chameleon Guitar – featuring a replaceable acoustic resonator functioning as the soundboard of the instrument. The goal of the design process is to create a tone as sonically close to that of a traditional guitar as possible, while maintaining an easily replaceable soundboard. An i...

Considering Virtual & Physical Aspects in Acoustic Guitar Design

This paper presents a new approach for designing acoustic guitars, making use of the virtual environment. The physical connection between users and their instruments is preserved, while offering innovative sound design. This paper will discuss two projects, reAcoustic eGuitar, the concept of a digitally fabricated instrument to design acoustic sounds, and A Physical Resonator For a Virtual Guit...

'GXtar', an interface using guitar techniques

In this paper we describe a new guitar-like musical controller. The 'GXtar' is an instrument which takes as a starting point a guitar but his role is to bring different and new musical possibilities while preserving the spirit and techniques of guitar. Therefore, it was conceived and carried out starting from the body of an electric guitar. The fingerboard of this guitar was equipped with two l...

Investigation of the Electromagnetic Properties of Electric Guitar

The goal of the project described in this thesis is to gain a deeper understanding of the detailed physics operative in electric guitar pickups in order to be able to build pickups with a more versatile set of tonal qualities. Using phase sensitive lock-in amplifier techniques, the complex impedance of several different guitar pickups was measured over the frequency range of human hearing. The ...

Robotaba Guitar Tablature Transcription Framework

This paper presents Robotaba, a web-based guitar tablature transcription framework. The framework facilitates the creation of web applications in which polyphonic transcription and guitar tablature arrangement algorithms can be embedded. Such a web application is implemented, and consists of an existing polyphonic transcription algorithm and a new guitar tablature arrangement algorithm. The res...
